First Time Registrants

If you are registering for the first time in Durham County, you may do so by submitting a voter registration form. Your First and Last Name, Residential Address, Mailing Address (if different than Residential), Date of Birth, Citizenship Status, and original "wet" signature are mandatory fields that must be completed on the registration form.  In addition, you must provide either your NC Driver's License Number, the last four digits of your Social Security Number, or indicate on the form that you do not have either forms of identification.  All fields on the registration form are extremely important and we request that you complete them in addition to the mandatory fields listed above. 

Original forms for new registrants must be mailed with a post-marked date prior to the Registration Deadline or hand-delivered to our office prior to the Registration deadline. Electronic signatures received via email or fax DO NOT satisfy the requirement of an original signature for first time registrations. Registrations submitted through the DMV are exempt from this requirement.

For first time voters registering in Durham County, you may:

• Mail your completed voter registration form to Durham County Board of Elections, P.O. Box 868, Durham, NC 27702.
• Hand-deliver the form to the Durham County Board of Elections at 3825 S. Roxboro Street, Suite 101, Durham, NC 27713

Current Registrants

For currently registered voters who need to make changes to Name, Address, Party, or any other information, you may fill out a voter registration form or complete the back of your Voter Registration Card and return it to our office by fax, email, mail, or in-person prior to the Voter Registration Deadline.  In addition, you may update your address and party using the NC DMV Voter Registration Online Portal.  Name changes on voter registration are not permitted via the NC DMV Voter Registration Online Portal. 

For currently registered voters in Durham County, you may: 

• Mail your completed voter registration form to Durham County Board of Elections, P.O. Box 868, Durham, NC 27702.
• Hand-deliver the form to the Durham County Board of Elections at 3825 S. Roxboro Street, Suite 101, Durham, NC 27713
• Email your completed voter registration form to Durham County Board of Elections at elections@dconc.gov.
• Fax your completed voter registration form to Durham County Board of Elections at 919-560-0688.

The deadline to register to vote is 25 days before the day of the election. Voter registration forms that are received at the Durham County Board of Elections office or postmarked by the deadline are accepted as valid applications for the upcoming election.

Early Voting provides an all-purpose solution for those seeking to:

• avoid potential delays on Election Day.
• vote on convenient days and during non-working hours.
• register to vote (proof of residency is required).
• avoid any registration conflict that could trigger the necessity of a provisional ballot on Election Day; or
• update their Durham County voter record if they have moved within the county since the last time voting.

In addition to the photo identification requirement, a HAVA document is required when using Same Day Voter Registration during Early Voting for proof of residency. The acceptable documents that may be used include a copy of one of the following that shows the name and address of the voter: a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, other government document, or a current document issued from the institution who issued the photo identification shown by the voter pursuant to G.S. 163-166.16.
